CHARACTER

NAME: Sam Winchester
AGE: CANON: Supernatural
CANON TYPE: TV series

BACKGROUND: Sam Winchester wikipedia article

CANON POINT: Season 5, before the episode Abandon All Hope

WORLD INFORMATION: Sam lives in contemporary America along with his big brother Dean, traversing the country from one end to the other in their father’s 1967 Impala. Together, they use the training passed down from their father to defeat all manner of ghouls and things that go bump in the night. In short, spirits and vampires and wendigos, oh my!

PERSONALITY: Sam is largely a sympathetic character, despite the necessary deceit and ruthlessness that’s often required in his line of work. While he often tries to limit the exposure of monsters to normal humans, when it can’t be helped, he shows a deep compassion for peoples’ situations and risks his life to keep them safe.

His personal life is a bit more tangled than that altruistic exterior would indicate. In his time on the road, Sam learned to divide people into two categories: family and everyone else. Holding a deep seated hero worship of his father and older brother, things get anything but easy when he begins to resent the isolation enforced on him, kept separate from normal people because of the things he knows about the creatures of the night, the demons that lurk around every corner. Eventually, he wants more than living from hotel room to hotel room, wants to live for more than avenging his murdered mother, and doesn’t want to be subject to his father’s treatment of them as “little soldiers” any longer. He wants out.

One acceptance letter to Stanford later, he swallows his family obligations down and leaves John and Dean, determined to make a life for himself, free of monsters and familial entrapments alike. More amazingly, they let him go, and that resentment is allowed to alternately fester and heal in turns over a few years of separation, carving out a niche that he fills with new relationships at college, a strong academic career, and a girlfriend he falls madly in love with: Jessica.

Upon her death by the same demon that killed his mother, Sam is dragged screaming back into the same job, the same methods, the same old reluctance to be around Dean, this time caught in his own whirlwind of revenge and the desperate search for his missing father, starting a saga of rough luck and emotional pitfalls that never quite seems to stem, not for years to come. Over it, Sam fights to hold onto who he is, the identity he made for himself at Stanford, but that willfully ignorant boy is slowly chipped away by the weariness of the world, the constant corners he and Dean are backed into. That softness gives way to his innate practicality and talent for survival, but he fights Dean every step of the way until he has no choice but to embrace their lot in life.

Sam has an unrelenting urge to prove himself, whether because of his place as the younger brother and “good son” or because he never felt he had the chance to have his own life, and that gets him into trouble when he begins to trust the demon Ruby. His codependence on his brother weakens by leaps and bounds as his self-reliance and determination strengthen, to make good use of the powers forced on him by the Yellow Eyed Demon. He is, however, not infallible, and forsaking his closeness to Dean, while well meaning, leads him down a dark path that ends in Lucifer’s cage being opened because of Sam’s actions, explicitly because Sam didn’t heed any warnings about trusting a demon.

At the point in canon he’s being taken from, Sam works to redeem himself to his brother and their mutual friend, the angel Castiel. After another well-intentioned, but ultimately short-lived separation, they decide that the best way to fight the apocalypse and protect each other is back to back. This time, Sam doesn’t want to waste the chance.

CONDITIONAL - SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS RP DEVELOPMENT: N/A

POWERS / ABILITIES: As a result of being fed demon blood as an infant, Sam later develops certain paranormal powers including limited precognition, immunity to certain demonic attacks, limited telekinesis, and the ability to exorcise demons with his mind, given he has recently ingested a significant amount of demon blood.

Aside from this, Sam grew up learning survival skills and methods of dispatching supernatural creatures from his father, John Winchester. Among the significant training he endured, he’s picked up a strong resourcefulness, superb marksmanship with anything from handguns to shotguns, he’s skilled at hand to hand combat and is rather brutally efficient with melee weapons like shovels and machetes.

By necessity, he’s also had to learn a few skills that help his brother and him survive outside of the law. These aren’t limited to carjacking, hotwiring, pool hustling, lock picking, theft, and conning. He’s also shown to be highly proficient in technological areas, excelling at research and hacking, and he is incredibly intelligent, having earned a full ride scholarship to Stanford while having lived most of his life on the road. Memorizing and recalling incantations and exorcisms is a walk in the park for him, and often comes up in tight situations where lives are on the line.

[ Video ]

[ As soon as the screen flickers on, the only thing visible past the fuzz is a pair of green eyes narrowed in concentration, until a sudden snap and the thing is being held at arm’s length, picture crystal clear again. ] All right, god, great, I didn’t think I’d be getting another if I broke this one. Thanks Dean.

[ A gargled shout from the half open shower closet tells Sam all he needs to know despite its lack of anything resembling intelligibility, but he should know better by now. It took Dean three days and a wailing Sam for him to admit he’d left the very plastic green army men on the trunk of the car in the middle of fucking summer in Ohio, and since then, he’s gotten better at pretending not to care unless it’s, oh, the only communication device he has in a strange, supernatural setting they’re both trapped in. Little things, ya know.

But Dad made Dean clean and wax the Impala for the next few times after that, so retribution has long been his, as well as video proof that Dean will reach for any nearby object to keep pigeons away from him.

Video swimming precariously from a significant height, Sam’s lips are pressed in the prissiest expression imaginable while he brings it in close and inspects superficial damage in the device. He calls back through the door.
] Sorry everything can’t be Daytona Beach and chicks in bikinis, but jesus, try not to mess with our chances of survival out here. We don’t even know if monsters can still be out and we just don’t know it yet.

[ The answer is again, indecipherable, but the irritation is rising in Sam, huffing and forgetting his task, video dropping to a close up of the jeans covering his thigh. ] Okay, you know, I’m going to out to do some actual exploring and comparisons once I find I library. Contact me when you’re done washing off the pigeon crap.

[ A panicked shout sounds before the device switches off. ]

THIRD PERSON:

Not during any part of his life did Sam get to come to London - the real London, but he also never understood the way college kids got it into their heads that they'd go out and roam the world, hitchhike their ways across Europe or something when their parents would pony up the money for Stanford but not for a trip. But what Sam had was all backwards, a road without a home at the end of it, hundreds of thousands of miles underfoot and a starting point he'd never circle back to like these people will.

Home found him again, yeah. But years after the fact, Sam still wasn't sure he's here because the universe won't let him go without, and that there just wasn't a place for him that ever fit as well as the space beside Dean.

It must be why he was put here with Dean, and god, Castiel, that poor bastard's been taken from everything he's known in the span of about a month. Life in Londinium has got to be like watching mankind crawl of the primordial ooze again. Not exactly fast lane stuff, but at least he could bamf around the place, and if being unable to get any kind of signal with Bobby or anyone, it was probably nothing compared to no angel radio.

Sam felt for him, but beyond that it was tough to say what'd happen to all of them. Sam kept it together as best he could and checked in with Dean about every hour, like the place was gonna go Croatoan on them all over again. Between that and reading everything he could find and looking at gag gifts he could bring Dean, there wasn't much else to be done so they could get the hell out of Dodge. The idea of waiting for either side of this cosmic war to come crashing down on them never did appeal to Sam, but Cas said they're stuck here. So be it, Sam would sit there and find whatever cracks in the frame there were to find in the incantation that's keeping them in Londinium.
